A pair of white gloves was used in one of the BSL Marches and was donated by Peter Brown who wore them.
What makes this pair special?
In 1987/88 the British Deaf Association mounted a campaign calling for the official recognition of British Sign Language (BSL) as an accepted language in Britain. From 1998 to 2002 there were many BSL Marches to campaign for this recognition. Some people wore white gloves as a symbol to draw attention to the use of hands in sign language. On 18th March 2003 the government finally recognised BSL but it was not recognised in Scotland until 22nd October 2015 when the BSL (Scotland) Act received Royal Assent.
